The Biography of a Grizzly
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (April, 1988)
Average review score:

A CLASSIC THAT STANDS THE TEST OF TIME AND GENERATIONSMy grade two teacher read this book for the class many ,many years ago and it truly touched me. A bear cub who is orphaned at the hands of the human learns to cope and survive to one day exact his revenge on the hated human. The book is written through the eyes of the bear it seems and you can't help but feel his pain and rage as he struggles through life alone. Whab, the name of the bear, is taken advantage of as a cub and through life. As he grows and becomes more bitter and angry,he will at times meet up with his old enemies from the woodland and through his eyes they all seem so much smaller now. This book is not all anger and bitterness but has some very tender moments as well. As well as this book is written, I never imagined I could ever feel pity or sympathy for such a creature as a grizzly. Ernest Thompson seton is a gifted writer and I have passed this gift on to many friends and aquaintances over the years. If you are looking for a book that your children will pass on to thier children for generations ; get this book. D.Seguin Edmonton Canada
A book that remains forever memorable.I acquired this book at age 9-10. Now, at age 75, I really miss it (it was "borrowed" 20-30 yrs ago). My nostalgic memory is of a haunting, memorable, and very literate tale of an excellent bear-person, who resolutely faces what life offers; infancy & vulnerability; growth & education, maturity & strength, suffering fools and agressors, and finally, decline and mortality. Seton's magic is to dissolve completely the artificial barrier between nature's creatures and ourselves.
wonderfulWhen Mother read this to me when I was a child, it delighted me and made a huge impression. She enjoyed it as much as I and I could tell she loved sharing this wonderful book with me. It is written for adults as well as children, and is fine literature. The story was so exciting, so touching, realistic, and funny. The end was sad and yet the author made me, a child, see that that is the way things must be; in the end of his life, the old bear must die.

Bobby Bear's Sticker Book: In the Field and Forest
Published in Paperback by Silver Dolphin (June, 1999)
Average review score:

Bobby Bear's Sticker Book: In the Field and ForestI have all of Maurice Pledger's sticker books: Bobby Bear, Billy Bunny, Olivia Owl, and Oscar Otter. I think they are well written, beautifully illustrated, and through the very generous number of stickers noted to match particular pages in the story, offer a tremendous interactive experience. I have four children between the ages of 2 and 7 and they all enjoy them at their own level. I have also probably bought more than 25 copies as birthday or other occasion gifts and they are always a hit with both children and parents. I definitely recommend this and any of these books.
A MUST HAVE BOOK!My 2.5 year old LOVES this book. I was amazed at the beautiful illustrations and the quality of the stickers. Each page includes a short story and stickers are provided to enhance the learning experience. For example, the first page introduces Bobby the Bear and tells of his life in the forest. It goes on to tell of Bobby's forest friends. Stickers of his forest friends are provided and the reader is able to put them on that page so that they become acquainted with other animals that live in the forest. This book also teaches/enhances matching and sorting skills. I'm planning on buying all of these sticker books. You can't beat the price.
A nice story and alot moreMy 2 1/2 year old just loves this book. It combines the things kids this age love - a story book and stickers and it's educational too! She needed adult supervision to do the stickers properly but it was alot of fun to do with her since the book is well written and so beautifully illustrated. I would recommend this book for toddlers and older. The stickers can be reused up to a point and given the quality the price is a value. Highly recommend it.

Brave Bear
Published in Library Binding by Walker & Co Library (August, 1999)
Average review score:

A great little book!Brave Bear is a wonderful little book about a bear cub who helps a baby bird who fell out of her nest. Rather than narrating the story like most children's books, Mallat instead uses compelling illustrations and the brief monologue of the cub, allowing the reader's and child's mind to fill in the rest. While short and simple enough to be read to the youngest child, the book can also serve as a catalyst for dialog with older children. "How do you think the bird felt when ___?" "Why did the bear _____?" Brave Bear is enjoyable to parent and child!
Teaches Early ReadingBecause the text accompanying the illustrations is concise, my three year old son has easily memorized all of the sentences. I'm sure the next step is "reading" each sentence for each dramatic event in this attention grabbing story. We've been reading it every night for two weeks solid.
GREAT BOOKI think this is a great book and there are some awsome drawings on it...it is a great book for younger kids who are learning about helping and sharing with each other

A Camping Spree With Mr. Magee
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (May, 2003)
Average review score:

Terrfic Artwork & Charming RhymesMy sons & are are long-standing fans of Mr. McGee and Dee since they took their boat out for a day on the sea. We were surprised when we found this new book where they go camping (or try to). Chris Van Dusen's art "makes" the stories. Every time we read this new story (& we have re-read it night after night), we comment on the sunset, the view through the trailer window, the poor raccoon getting out of the way all the time, the car heading down the hill the "other way", the view from the falls, and the freshly-cut lawn back at home. The story is delightful and fun to read time after time. And for those of you growing up in the 60's, the trailer in this book brings back memories of the one I always begged my parents to buy. I hope Mr. Van Dusen's working on his next Mr. McGee book.
FantasticI just happened to read a story on Chris Van Dusen in DownEast Magazine and thus became intrigued. I, also, bought Down To the Sea with Mr Magee and my 3 year old and I love them both. I love the illustrations and the stories are delightful. I hope he plans on doing more books!!
Our new favorite!Van Dusen has done it again ... this time Mr. Magee and Dee get into hilarious trouble with a near-sighted bear. My kids LOVE this new book. And I don't mind reading it over and over. Illustrations are brilliant and colorful and FUN. The story is exciting, silly and the characters in this book are endearing. Mr. Magee for President!

Chasing Bears
Published in Paperback by Consortium Book Sales & Dist (15 June, 1999)
Average review score:

chashing bears reviewI think that chashing bears is a very good book and that the forester family got closer, that danny grew stronger and stronger and that him and his dad hank got closer and that mike gain some respect for danny and knew if danny wanted to be a computer freak he can be and if he was weak he was weak...
Chasing BearsI purchased this book to read to my 9 yr son while vactioning in Voyageurs National Park. On a rainy day I began reading it to my son out loud. Soon my husband and 12 year daughter came to listen. It became our evening ritual, reading several chapters out loud to the whole family. It is very well written and suspenseful. We hope he writes another book.
Adventure in the North woodsI found this book to be educational as well as entertaining. It discusses details of canoeing and camping but is also a good story about fathers and sons getting to know each other and changing because of their adventures.

Dancing with the Wheel
Published in Paperback by Baen Books (February, 1992)
Average review score:

A gift from Mother EarthThis book teaches us the how to communicate in a deeper and more personal way with ourselvs and the earth. It teaches us healing ceremonies and songs, it teaches us how to build our own wheels with the help of plants and stones and colors, with wonderful illustrations and instructions to guide us every step of the way. It will teach you how to see the spirit inside each living thing from the single stone on a trail to the mighty hawk high above us. I believe with the help of this book we as brothers and sisters can finially begin to heal our earth.
Excellent foundation to understanding the Medicine WheelThis book provides the information needed to get a good understanding of the medicine wheel. Don't read it as a technical manual. Consider it to be your guide on your journey to yourself. It will give you clear info when you're ready for your next step. It is very nicely illustrated and very readable. It enables you to find info on animals, plants and minerals. It is a real workbook that can be used over and over and which doesn't lose its value over time. If you would only buy one book on this subject, this should be it!
Must read!Strong, concise, intellegent, real what more is there to say

Deep in the Forest
Published in School & Library Binding by E P Dutton (November, 1989)
Average review score:

lovely and funny retelling of the Goldilocks storyA curious bear cub leaves his mother to investigate a cabin deep in the forest. He investigates bowls, chairs and beds before falling asleep -- just in time for the family to return from a walk. Beautiful and humorous illustrations are the star of this textless retelling. Our two-and-a-half-year old loves this book -- asking for it several times a day -- participating in the 'reading', laughing, feeling indignant for the little girl and her broken things. This is a charming storybook.
A charming twist on a classic children's story. This book turns the story of Goldilocks around. A small bear invades Goldilocks house. It is a wordless picture book that can be used to inspire young students in creative writing, or encourage pre-schoolers imagination. The illustrations are delightful.
a great "read" for little onesThis retelling of the Goldilocks story is a big hit with my three-year-old. Without words, the illustrations show a little bear's adventures in a little girl's cabin. While she and her parents are out the bear investigates the porridge, the chairs and the beds. The family returns and the drawings of the little girl's indignant reaction to her spilled porridge and broken chair are priceless. The little bear is discovered in the little girl's bed and is chased away, returning to his waiting mother bear. My son loves to narrate the story for me. The illustrations tell the story perfectly and the humor of the role reversal certainly was not lost on him.

Eeyore Has a Birthday (Aslide and Peek Boo)
Published in Hardcover by Dutton Books (March, 1999)
Average review score:

perfect small-scale Pooh for young readersThis little book is an exact reproduction of a chapter 6 in the original book, Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne, with the original illustrations by Shephard enhanced by judicious watercoloring. All the charm of the original, in a perfect size for reading to littler kids, who can feel satisfied at having been read "the whole story." Also good for children just starting to read all by themselves.
Beautifully bound and illustrated, this little book is part of a series of 10 such Pooh books published by Dutton. Don't confuse these 10 "storybooks" with the even smaller and abridged board-books for infant/toddlers.
it was ggreat I love itI love eeyore he is my favorite charter. I loved his book. It was neato.
Relevant to children not to mention, entertaining! When all the characters in the imaginary world of Winnie the Pooh go on their day to day mischiefs, forgetting a friends special day, it makes one see how cartoon characters really portray real life situations. The full page of colors allows one to sit back and get the satisfaction of a children's book. Yet this book not only addresses a child's awareness nor is it an entertainment instrument but as well as a joyful piece of literature for any age group to admire

First Snow
Published in School & Library Binding by Candlewick Press (September, 1993)
Average review score:

The illustrations are beautiful! My son and I love all Kim Lewis's books. Her cosy illustrations are so dear. This story is simple and meaningful.
My 2 1/2 year old daughter Sara's favorite book.My little Sara loves books and this is her favorite (and I really like it too - it is a pleasure to read it over and over and over... :). She has never fed sheep, but she helps me feed our dog. She may or may not remember what snow is like. But Kim Lewis makes the entire story real and meaningful for her. Every time we read it and get to a particular page she identifies with Sara and says "she's sad!" We are very happy they have such a good dog that saves the day. This book took her to a beautiful new world and we never tire of returning.
This book has great pictures as described elsewhere on this page. It also has a great plot and appropriate character development for a little listener. I think the text in this book is helping my daughter make the connections between words and stories. She even asks me to read the very last page, which is a short bio of Kim Lewis. She wants me to read every word. Maybe this book will increase her desire to learn to read for herself some day. I want to read more of Lewis' books.
My 2 year olds favorite story out of 300!It's true - this is my two year old sons' favorite story out of the 300+ that sit on his bookshelf. The illustrations are glorious, and the story is simply wonderful. I swear we can smell the clean, crisp air that the author depicts on that mountain! I highly recommend this one - in fact, I just ordered five more books by Ms. Lewis!

Fix-It
Published in School & Library Binding by E P Dutton (October, 1984)
Average review score:

Lost by David McPhailAs an elementary educator, I highly recommend this book for both teachers and parents of young children. The power of reading over watching television has substantial research and ultimately confirms that reading is a powerful tool. David McPhail is my hero when it comes to writing and illustrating text. His delightful message is not only for Emma the bear, but for all children. Read Read Read.
A Great Little BookDavid McPhail's "Fix-It" is a charming way to introduce reading to beginning or relunctant readers. Emma wakes up one morning to find the television set not working. Her dad, mom and even the repairman are unable to fix it. When the T.V. problem is finally solved, Emma no longer cares. She has found an equally enjoyable activity, reading a book. Although this book could be considered a "baby book" by more "experienced" readers, preschoolers should be able to find this book appealing. The message that the book is trying to get across to children is great. The illustrations are soft and help tell the story accurately. This book has charm and should be enjoyed by a variety of children.
Great for pre-readers and beginning readers!David McPhail's Fix-it! is a charming book. The illustrations are clear; the text is simple. It is good for pre-readers and beginning readers. The book promotes reading with your children.
